How to set up hotkeys for Google Chrome extensions

Google Chrome is a very popular browser. Sometimes there are some questions to it, mainly with performance, but there are not so many of them to put an end to this browser. Nevertheless, this browser also has some very useful features that are always a pleasure to share, and we do so often. Everyone knows that Google Chrome supports working with extensions, but everyone knows how to “hang” them on hotkeys. But this is very convenient and allows you to further increase productivity. Especially, this applies to those extensions that we often use and refer to them throughout the day.

Setting up hotkeys will greatly facilitate the work with Google Chrome.

Chrome keyboard shortcuts

The quick expansion method described in this article does not apply to smartphones. Since its implementation requires a physical keyboard. Also, the mobile version of Chrome does not support working with the extension in the sense that the desktop version does. But the tips will be useful for both users Windows and Mac users.

Although, even here there are features and not all extensions will work fine with hot keys. It's just that not all extensions support this feature, but during configuration you will be able to see it and understand whether it will be possible to assign “hotkeys” to this particular extension.

How to launch Chrome extensions

In order to launch Google Chrome extensions, you need to click on its icon next to the address bar. They get there immediately after installation and essentially hang within walking distance, but you still need to reach them with the mouse.

Personally, I type a lot, I switch between tabs using hotkeys and I also find it more convenient to call extensions with hotkeys. Of course, this only applies to those that really need to be opened and their main functionality is not limited to working in the background.

Without removing your hands from the keyboard, using additional functions is much more convenient.

How to set up hotkeys for Google Chrome extensions

First of all, you need to understand where all the extensions are located and how to access them. Only then will it be possible to make changes to the way they run. Many people think that they can be controlled only by launching them next to the address bar, but this is not the case.

To access the extensions, you need to click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the program interface. In the drop-down menu, select the “Additional Tools” item, which is located almost at the very bottom. Hovering over it, another menu will appear, in which you will need to select “Extensions”.

Only two steps to configure extensions.

All your extensions will appear in front of you, with which you can familiarize yourself or configure them. It is interesting that by clicking “More” next to the extension, you will not be able to make some settings, for example, hotkeys.

To configure them, you need to press three strips on the left side of the screen and already there you need to set up shortcuts by selecting the appropriate item. Only those extensions that support hotkeys will open before you. I have only two of the six installed.

Here we select 'Shortcuts'.

To directly configure hotkeys, you need to click on the “Specify shortcuts” field and choose the combination that seems convenient to you. To do this, you must use the Shift, Alt and Control keys (or Command if you have a Mac). A letter or number must be assigned to them. If such a combination is not available, the system will simply not accept it.

We set the combination that will be convenient.

How to install Google Chrome extensions

Installing Google Chrome extensions is very simple, but you need to understand which extension you need. To do this, you can use an Internet search and find reviews on forums and thematic sites, or read the description in the extension store inside Google Chrome.

You can open the extension store using this link. Next, you will need to drive into the search what you need, and already choose. If everything is simple with conditional translators, then with other extensions it will sometimes be more difficult. But you can just study the list of recommendations. Perhaps there will be what you need, and you did not even know what it is.

How to remove Google Chrome extensions

If you got everything from the extension you were using and you no longer need it, you can and should remove it so that it does not hang in plain sight and overload the insides of Chrome.

To do this, you need to perform just a few actions:

  • Press “three dots” in the upper right corner of the screen
  • Select “Additional tools”
  • In our menu, select “Extensions”
  • Find the extension you need and click “Remove next to it”

These simple steps will allow you to get rid of a heap of unnecessary extensions and what is simply stored on your computer.

Removing extensions is easy.

Are browser extensions safe

In this place, you can argue a little, and you can do this in our Telegram chat, but objectively there is still a risk. Many extensions run in the background and therefore access the information you view or send.

This is largely why it is better to remove unused extensions and control what you install with a preference for trusted developers. If you do this, then the use of extensions will be as safe as possible, and the risks can be neglected.
