Many are skeptical about DxO tests, but until recently I did not understand the reasons for this attitude. It seemed to me that this is a reputable organization that honestly tests all smartphones. But it's not that simple. And in this material, using Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro as an example, I will try to show why I did not like the next DxOMark testing, and why it seems to me that the guys are still not playing a fair game.
Why DxOMark scores are a boolean using Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
In the camera quality test, the device took the first place with a score of 124 points. iPhone 11 Pro Max scored 117 points in this test. Is Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro really better than iPhone? Let's figure it out.
The Mi 10 scored 134 points for the photo, and 104 for the video. iPhone for the quality of the photo it gains 124 points, and for the quality of the video 102 points. For now, let's dwell on the photographs.
In some comparisons, instead of iPhone DxO inserts examples of Mi CC9 Pro. Why? Unclear. I assume that in scenes where iPhone performs better, the smartphone Xiaomi does not look worse.
I cropped the very first example. Just look at this face, smeared with watercolors. Neural networks are cool, but why artificially draw pixels so strongly? One gets the impression that this is not a photograph, but a drawing. Also, take a look at how unrealistic the face of the main character in the photo is.
Below is a comparison of Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max:
Sample photo Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
Sample photo iPhone 11 Pro Max
It's obvious to me that iPhone performed better here. In this test, the company only evaluated autofocus. But let's be honest: who evaluates the individual camera capabilities? In my opinion, you should always look at the picture as a whole. For example, here is a photo of a man. See how unrealistic his face is compared to iPhone:
Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
iPhone 11 Pro Max
Of course, I understand that objectively the photo on Xiaomi is clearer and more interesting, but the face looks unrealistic in comparison with iPhone.
And the next example in general threw me into a stupor. I will never believe that HDR + mode iPhone can take such a terrible photo:
Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
iPhone 11 Pro Max
The rest of the examples seemed fair enough to me, the main problem iPhone is not very high-quality work in poor lighting. But to make it so bad – I will never believe it.
In terms of video quality, everything is also not so simple:
For example, it seems to me that the camera iPhone was shaken much more during the run. The stabilization iPhone has always been famous for its quality, but here it is obvious that it was intentionally shaken more during the run.
Of course, I could be wrong, and the camera Xiaomi can do really well. She does this, but it seems to me that everything is not very clean. I really want to independently compare the two devices in normal use in order to understand the difference, because I do not presume to trust DxO at the moment.
