Chronology

By January 5, in the city of Wuhan, where the virus was first detected, 59 cases of infection were recorded, seven people were in critical condition. At that time, there was no information that the virus is transmitted from person to person.

On January 10, Pulkovo began checking all arriving tourists from China, measuring their temperature. At that time, there were no deaths from the virus, so it was considered not as dangerous as the outbreak of SARS in 2003 or the coronavirus, which became the cause of the Middle East respiratory syndrome with a mortality rate of about 35%.

On January 16, information appeared that the first case of charging with a new type of coronavirus was registered in Japan. It was a 30-year-old Chinese citizen who arrived in the Japanese prefecture from Wuhan. A couple of days later – on January 18 – British scientists announced that the figures regarding the number of infected people were significantly underestimated. For example, British scientists believed that the number of charged people was 1700, and the fact that the virus was already spreading to other countries indicates that the number of infections could be significantly higher.

On January 19, official information was received from China about 17 cases of coronavirus infection, and already on January 20, 136 new cases of pneumonia, the source of which was the new coronavirus, were recorded from Saturday to Sunday. Later that day, the first case of coronavirus infection was recorded in South Korea. In the evening of the same day, with reference to the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, CNN TV channel reported that the virus can be transmitted from person to person.

By January 21, the fourth human death was recorded due to coronavirus, by which time the official number of infected people was 217. Later, experts from the World Health Organization scheduled an emergency meeting on January 22, at which the issue of the threat of the new coronavirus to international security was considered. In the meantime, the development of a vaccine against the virus began in the United States, and by the evening of the same day, information appeared about the first infected in Washington state. On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Health promised to develop an express test to detect infection with the Chinese coronavirus. By that time, the number of victims had reached 6 people, and the number of those infected had increased to 324.

On January 22, 9 people died from the new virus, and 440 people have already become infected. In Hong Kong, doctors confirmed the first case of the virus. Russia began developing a vaccine, later two people at the St. Petersburg Pulkovo airport were hospitalized with suspected SARS, and the liner, which flew in from China, was disinfected. By the evening of January 22, both patients of the St. Petersburg hospital were diagnosed with ARVI.

To date, 617 people have been infected in China, 17 people have died. While no cases of infection with the virus have been recorded in Russia, the Chinese authorities, meanwhile, decided to close the city of Wuhan, which became the source of the new virus.

Can you get the coronavirus through a package?

Scientists admit the transmission of the virus through packages from Aliexpress. Our colleagues from Izvestia were told by Aliexpress representatives that they are in close cooperation with Rospotrebnadzor.

The coronavirus is not only transmitted by air. They can also be infected by contact with objects that the sick person touched. This was stated by the head of the virology laboratory of the Federal Research Center Mikhail Shchelkanov:

Small droplets with the virus, which are formed when coughing and sneezing, settle on household items, and a person, touching them, may well become infected

However, should you be so afraid of a new virus? In fact, the likelihood that a package from China will be contaminated is extremely small, since coronaviruses are not resistant to environmental changes. According to Galina Kozhevnikova, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases with courses in epidemiology and phthisiology at the RUDN University, the virus is destroyed at a temperature of 56 degrees, and at 37 degrees it is deactivated in 10-15 minutes.

If an infected object is in a humid room, it is likely that the virus will reactivate. But do not worry, because the virus, according to Kozhevnikova, lives in the external environment for only a few hours, and the likelihood that it mutates and becomes more stable is extremely small.

The risk of transmission of the virus in contact with goods or parcels has not been identified.
