Smart glasses are a thing that always seemed to me to be something superfluous and not very universal. After all, if watches are used to wearing plus or minus everything, and therefore endowing them with intelligence could not change the user's attitude towards them, then smart glasses are a completely different matter. Not only is it difficult to imagine why they might be needed at all, but you also need to convince people with good eyesight, of whom there are clearly more, to wear them on an ongoing basis. But it seems Huawei has found a way to the hearts of users.
Huawei teamed up with design bureau Gentle Monster to make beautiful smart glasses
The company Huawei has introduced its own smart glasses Huawei Eyewear II, developed in collaboration with the South Korean manufacturer of sunglasses and optical glasses Gentle Monster. In fact, this is a second generation product, as the name implies, but the original model, which debuted last year, came out in limited edition and did not go outside of China.

Huawei Eyewear II are unique smart glasses in many ways. They are completely different from what Google did before the Chinese. If the brainchild of the search giant really left no doubt that this was a high-tech gadget from the future, then in the case of glasses Huawei, this feeling does not remain. Looking at them, I would never have thought that these are smart glasses. Rather, they are perceived as a stylish accessory, which, in fact, they are.
Huawei specifically relied on the familiar design. After all, I personally – and, I'm sure, many people too – don't really want to buy Google Glass. They are too futuristic. And Huawei Eyewear II – look more friendly.
The Chinese did not flirt with the integration of displays into lenses, but simply left this part Huawei of the Eyewear II alone. All smart components are located in the temples. Because of this, they are slightly thicker than those of regular glasses. However, this does not prevent them from remaining quite a functional device.
Huawei Eyewear II is equipped with:
- Voice assistant support;
- Microprocessor and built-in memory;
- A system of microphones and speakers;
- GSM-module for making and receiving calls.

That is, there is no support for augmented or virtual reality, the ability to watch videos on YouTube in real time or communicate with interlocutors via video communication. But the glasses can be used as a phone, as well as request the information you are interested in from the voice assistant. Don't worry – the volume of the speakers is adjusted so that no one except the owner can hear what the glasses are telling them. In principle, it was possible to equip the Huawei Eyewear II with a built-in heart rate monitor, given that they are located close enough to the temples, but the Chinese decided to do without it.
Glasses Huawei come in four modifications, which differ from each other only in appearance and, of course, in price:
- Smart Myma: sunglasses, titanium frames – $ 390;
- Smart Verona: optical lenses, plastic frames – $ 360;
- Smart Allo: optical lenses, titanium frames – $ 390;
- Smart Cetta: Design Series – $ 360.
Huawei did not specify how many hours can live on one charge, but the process of recharging the built-in batteries was implemented very elegantly – according to the principle of AirPods. The glasses are placed in a special case, which is no different from a classic eyeglass case, and are charged from the built-in batteries.
To some Huawei Eyewear II may not seem functional enough to call them smart glasses. But who even said what smart glasses can be and what not? Indeed, until now, the only trendsetter in this market was Google. But, as we see today, her brainchild is not popular and does not cause interest among users to purchase it. Huawei, on the other hand, offered a completely working solution that can be useful in everyday life, because asking an assistant a question, reading a message or taking a call personally for me will be much more useful than watching content in augmented reality while walking down the street.
