Google added new features to the power button in Android 11

Not so long ago, there was evidence in Android 11 that Google will finally add quick access to the wallet with a long press on the smartphone's on / off button. But it looks like the company has much more serious plans for a pop-up menu that appears every time you want to turn off your phone. In the code of the new version Android, it was discovered that this menu can be turned into a control center for other devices, which will allow you to get quick access to smart gadgets of a smart home.

The shutdown button menu will change a lot

New Features Android 11

The smart home control interface is currently under development, according to developers at XDA. When you press the shutdown button for a long time, the usual sections of the power menu (shutdown, restart, screenshot, emergency mode) are placed at the top. On top of them you can see the barely readable inscription 'Home' – apparently, it is just not in its place for now, yet Android 11 is still in beta.

The rest of the menu remains completely blank, leaving plenty of room for potential smart home-related controls.

Initially, this was only a suggestion of beta testers, but literally a few hours later, Google reacted to the news (apparently, remote work did not prevent the company's employees from monitoring the leaks). True, they reacted in their own way – Google published some documentation necessary for application developers to quickly manage using the shutdown menu in Android 11. Soon after, XDA employees got acquainted with the principles of Quick Control and published a demo video.

In the video, we see that in the Quick Control menu, at least you can turn on and off smart home devices, as well as adjust the brightness of the light using the slider. It looks like you will only see your 'favorite' smart home devices on the list, which can be important for those who have a lot of such gadgets.

Canceling Google I / O

However, the details of the new feature are still unknown and it is not clear when we will receive official comment, as Google finally canceled the 2020 I / O conference, even in online format. The main question is how the menu for managing smart home devices and the wallet section will coexist with bank cards and tickets. What would you like to see more in the shutdown menu of your phone? At the same time, Apple, for example, did not cancel the WWDC 2020 conference, despite rumors about the corresponding plans. The company's management has decided to hold WWDC 2020 in June 2020, but exclusively in an online format. In addition to the announcement of the latest versions of operating systems Apple, WWDC 2020 will host specialized mini-presentations of new OS functions. And this requires not only clarity, but also, probably, an interactive presentation format. Therefore, I admit that Cupertino will develop a special platform for hosting webinars, which will only be accessible to developers with a pass. Why they didn't go to Google along the same path is absolutely incomprehensible to me.

When will Android 11 come out

The date of the official presentation remains unknown. But, most likely, in September-October Android 11 will already be available for the company's 'pixel' smartphones. A little later, according to tradition, gadgets from other manufacturers will also begin to receive the coveted update. Here revelations are unlikely to happen. The OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro were the first non-Google smartphones to receive Android 10 'out of the box'. So given this fact, as well as the fact that Google and OnePlus are in a rather warm relationship, a similar development of events can be expected in a year.

Android 11 brings an improved dark theme, easier file transfer and Scoped Storage. It's a new way of organizing what information and files applications can read and use. Simply put, the most important files will be placed in the most 'easily accessible' areas of the smartphone's memory.
