Recently, there has been a lot of talk about virtual reality. Of course, it was not just invented, but right now, with the release of the new Half-Life and the transition to virtual communication, the topic somehow flared up with renewed vigor. Although, this technology is still far from ideal. It is far from ideal so far with augmented reality, which was so actively developed first Apple, and then Google. Augmented reality is much more promising than virtual. It can be used every day in any place, and virtual – only in a limited space for immersion in a separate world. But there is also something more interesting and promising – XR. And no, this is not a previous generation model iPhone.
a new level of reality is already close. But it is not exactly.
What will happen after AR and VR
Just a couple of days ago, the Augmented World Expo (AWE 2020), which was held in the United States, ended. It was held, like everything else now, in an online format. One of the exhibitors was Qualcomm Technologies, known for its chips, which are found in a huge number of flagship smartphones on Android and other gadgets. As a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, it has recently established partnerships with the world's largest carriers, mobile device manufacturers and XR manufacturers. All of this should contribute to the widespread adoption of XR among users next year.
The XR Viewer isn't really a device category. Basically it is a combination of AR and VR that can be applied in different devices. It just needs to be standardized, and so the global operators together decided to share plans for the further commercialization of the technology. The consumer of XR will be a simple AR and VR user. It can also use the new standard through new fifth-generation networks, where it will be most relevant given the speeds that this network offers.
What is XR
Initially XR (or, as it was also called “Extended Reality” or “Cross Reality”) was not intended as something specific. Marketers talked about it mainly as combining VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), MR (modified reality), CR (cinematic reality) and other abbreviations that are not used now. All of these letter combinations eventually came together in VR and AR. These two concepts in some circles and were combined in XR.
AR is good, but there is room for improvement too.
Now more and more often there is a definition of XR as a separate technology, which is the transfer of virtual objects to the real world, for example, by means of holograms or, conversely, the transfer of real objects to a fictional world. For example, make a complete copy of yours in a computer game.
All this looks very interesting, but it is too early to talk about real achievements in this industry. And it is not yet known whether this trend will retain its name or receive some other. Now everyone loves the letter “X”, but what will happen in a few years, no one knows.
Are you a believer in such technologies? This must be solved in our Telegra
Who is XR
The fifteen global companies that have joined this work include China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, EE, KT, LG Uplus, KDDI, Orange, SoftBank, Verizon, Vodafone, Telefonica and NTT DOCOMO . These brands agree that XR viewers can run on a mobile processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 or 865. They will connect to a smartphone via a USB-C cable or over a network 5G. All of this can take AR and VR to the next level. Imagine holographic telepresence as a new way to communicate and consume content.
The devices may be different, but they should work in the same way.
The XR Viewer allows you to make virtual contacts with anyone or with a fantasy world. With a more standardized system and technology, easier interactions may be available to users. The Qualcomm XR Optimized Certification program proposes its standards for the unification of XR technologies and how it will all be integrated into the global consumption and content creation system, regardless of which manufacturer it will be on.
The main goals of this promotion are:
- Viewer orientation
- Viewer and smartphone compatibility
- Increase the speed of the entire system
- Maintaining six degrees of freedom (6DoF)
When XR appears
We can expect new XR viewing devices next year as more brands pass certification such as Nreal, iQIYI, 3Glasses, Panasonic, OPPO, Shadow Creator and Pico. We will soon see new XR devices and smartphones with the Qualcomm XR Optimized badge.
Then we'll heal! After the advent of such technologies, the world will never be the same, and the channels of communication and content to which we are accustomed will change greatly. It will turn out like with smartphones. Many users are likely to embrace the new technology. And those who do not accept will be treated as those who still fundamentally choose push-button “dialers”, having the opportunity to buy any smartphone.
