Samsung branded processors are a stumbling block almost every time when it comes to the new Galaxy S or Galaxy Note. This is due to the fact that Exynos , which Samsung produces, is inferior in performance to Snapdragon, but smartphones on these processors cost the same. Of course, users are not happy to pay for the device as much as the “neighbor”, but still receive a stripped-down version. Yes, in some ways Exynos is even better than Qualcomm's solutions, but overall it still loses. It looks like the point is that the processors will not just align, but that the Korean chip will even become better than the American one. How is this possible?
Samsung's new processor could finally get better.
Samsung Exynos processor
According to sources, Samsung's Exynos 1000 (which will be the name of the next generation chip) from Samsung will be more powerful than the Snapdragon 875. Moreover, the Exynos chipset can outperform the Snapdragon 875 not only in sheer power, but also in various performance tests.
Samsung and Qualcomm are two companies that take processor and other chips very seriously. That being said, Samsung is releasing two variants of its flagships, one of which runs on Snapdragon and the other on Exynos.
The fact that the performance of the two versions of the same Samsung smartphone turned out to be different, we have repeatedly seen in various tests, and users of our Telegram chat have repeatedly written that they regretted buying a smartphone in Russia. Some even sold it and bought it with delivery from the USA. This is where Samsung flagships are sold with Snapdragon. In other markets, including Russia in particular and Europe in general, there is only one choice – Exynos. Moreover, it costs the same. In the best case, you will be offered more memory, but nothing more.
However, in 2021, both companies will not pursue a similar strategy for the release of their flagship chipsets. And this should lead to the fact that the difference between the flagships may not be obvious at all.
Smartphones based on these processors may soon equalize.
Cortex-X1 processor architecture
Samsung and Qualcomm will use the new Cortex-X1 architecture for maximum performance. But the next question is: which of the two chipsets will be more powerful?
The first Samsung smartphone to receive these new chipsets will be the Galaxy S21 (S30). But recent reports suggest the Exynos 1000 will outperform the Snapdragon 875 in terms of performance. This information came from a Korean forum where the Geekbench test results were published.
According to the reports, two Galaxy S21 phones were tested. One was powered by an Exynos 1000 and the other was powered by a Snapdragon 875 SoC. Interestingly, Xiaomi Mi 11 with Snapdragon 875 was also added to the mix, but it's not clear why. It should be noted that there are no generic screenshots. So take this information with a grain of salt.
Snapdragon 875 and Exynos 1000 Geekbench score
Coming back to the benchmark, according to the forum, it got good marks in the single-core and multi-core benchmarks. It was 1302 and 4250 points, respectively. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 875-powered Galaxy S21 scored 1159 and 4090 points. Xiaomi Mi 11, according to this information, scored 1102 and 4113 points.
One source was skeptical of the results, suggesting that Samsung deliberately increased the processor clock speed from baseline. If this is really the case, then we have another reason for disappointment and understanding that the picture to which we are already accustomed may not change.
It is important that equality is achieved not by Snapdragon getting worse, but by Exynos getting better.
However, if you believe the information received and the fact that testing was actually carried out, then we can say that it, at least, confirms the operation of both chips on the same architecture. The Cortex-X1 architecture should become a new word in the world of processors, and the desire of world leaders for it only confirms this once again.
Unfortunately, there is no confirmation from official sources of what was given as test results yet. At the same time, it cannot be argued that chips and prototypes of smartphones do not exist. Yes, it is still far from the official announcement, but the development is in full swing, and it is already necessary to test the hardware.
We, of course, will still wait for official information and test results from other sources, but what we have is already a good sign. If everything goes as we were shown, then finally it will be possible to buy a smartphone in Russia, which will be no worse than the one brought from the USA, and maybe even better.
At the very least, this would be fair, because it’s not very pleasant to pay 100,000 rubles for a smartphone, hoping to get the best of the best, and instead be content with pared down performance. I don’t know about you, but in this respect I am waiting for changes!
